Low cost IR based distance measurement system using MSP430 Microcontroller

Generally, the distance measurement system in very much useful in applications like Robotic cars, Snake Robots, Obstacle detection robot, inter vehicular distance calculation in transportation for safe driving. For example, a robotic car can take direction based upon the distance measured between the obstacle and the car. In a snake robot application one can measure the diameter of the whole using distance measurement system and make decisions according to the size of the hole. In inter-vehicular distance calculation system, this device is very useful for the driver for safety driving. Most of the distance measurement systems are implemented by using ultra sonic sensors, but these sensors are very high in cost which in turn increase the overall system cost.

In this project, a solution is provided to reduce the cost of the distance measurement device with the help of Infrared sensor technology. The sensors are readily available in the market with cheaper cost. So that, the entire cost of the distance measuring device is reduced. And at the same MSP430G2553 will reduce the cost of the project further, due to its internal features like in-built ADC, In built clock circuit, etc.,

 To develop this project, an infrared transmitter and receiver is used to find the distance between the obstacle and the sensors. The Infrared receiver is connected to one of the ADC channel of the MSP430, which will produce digital output according to the variations in distance between the obstacle and Infrared sensors. Finally the measured distance is displayed on the 16x2 character LCD display.
