Color Identification Device using MSP430

Generally in robotic applications like color tracking robot need to identify the colors of different objects and follow them. To identify the color of the objects people may use the camera in simple robotics applications. This will increase the cost and development time of the robot.  In another robotics application like line follower robot it is required to identify the line track color (white, black), and this can be achieved by using infrared sensor technology. But the problem with infrared sensor technology is that it is more sensitive to ambient light and it is not that much effective  to identify remaining colors other that white and black.

In this project, a solution is provided to solve the above described problems. A color identification device is developed to identify different colors, which can be achieved by using simple LDR device and a microcontroller device, so that it will reduce the cost of the entire application. The analog variations in the LDR output according to the color will be detected by microcontroller with the help of analog to digital converter. The microcontroller processed the ADC output and recognizes the colors of objects. A very large range of colors can be identified by using this mechanism, but here, the application is designed to identify very few colors.

This application uses a simple LDR used to recognize the color and it is converted digital by using Analog to digital converter. A 16x2 LCD character display is used to show the color recognized by the device. MSP430 microcontroller is best suit for this application, because it contains in-built ADC and it consumed very low power, therefore, the device can be operated by battery.
