Automatic Irrigation system using moisture sensor and MSP430

At the present era, the farmers have been using irrigation technique in India through the manual control, in which the farmers irrigate the land at the regular intervals. This process sometimes consumes more water or sometimes farmer may forget to switch ON the irrigation system, because of that the crops may get dried. Water deficiency can be detrimental to plants before visible wilting occurs. Slowed growth rate, lighter weight fruit follows slight water deficiency.
This problem can be rectified by using automatic irrigation system using a microcontroller. This automatic system can be operated by sensing wetness of the land. The automatic irrigation system itself switches ON to watering the crop field at regular intervals of time without the involvement of the farmer. A water moisture sensor is incorporated which will signal the microcontroller system about required water content is supplied to the field or not. According to moisture sensor output, the microcontroller will switch ON or OFF the DC motor. If the land is wet then the microcontroller will automatically switch OFF the DC motor. If the land is dry then the microcontroller will automatically switch ON the DC motor and supply required water to the irrigation field.

In this project, DC motor along with microcontroller circuitry shows the automatic irrigation system. A moisture sensor is used to know the required water is supplied to the field or not. With the help of the moisture sensor output, the low power MSP430 MCU will drive the motor. And the status of the field wetness can be shown in the 16x2 character LCD display. A ULN2803 is used to drive the DC motor and this DC motor in this prototype project indicate the Motor ON and OFF in the irrigation field.
