8051 Microcontroller based Highway Traffic Congestion Avoidance Using IR|Laser Technology


Traffic Jams are the big problem now-a-days for highway road transportation. Due these traffic jams the journey time increases to double or triple the original journey time. Because of these traffic jams sometimes the journey time takes days even though the distance is not large. Basically, these traffic jams are occurred due to road accidents in the highways or due to strikes against government. These situations can’t be predictable or unavoidable, so we need to divert the highway traffic by identifying the traffic jam automatically.
In this project, detection of highway traffic JAM can be done by using laser or IR technology. Here, we are developing prototype of the project idea, so we use only simple IR based sensor technology to make the idea to work.
Each IR sensor transmitter and receiver sections are placed opposite sides of the roads. Every two sensors are placed at equal distance along the highway road. The signal connection between the IR transmitter and the receiver is disturbed when a vehicle is passed between them. The disturbance between transmitter and receiver is only certain interval of time which is equal to the length of the vehicle.
Suppose when traffic Jam is occurred the signals between the IR transmitter and receiver of all sensors around that particular region were disturbed. And the disturbance between the IR transmitters and receivers long last until the traffic jam is cleared. When two of more IR sensors are get disturbed, then it is the indication of traffic jam and a controlling circuit which monitors the signal disturbance will alarm the main control board of the Highway Traffic Control System. Then Highway Traffic Control System will send message to Highway Led Sign Boards which are placed across the Highway road to indicate occurrence of the traffic jam and also display the traffic diversion path.
By seeing the message shown in the LED Message Displays, the drivers of the vehicles may take the diversion given in the LED message display boards. In this way we can reduce the traffic congestion in the highways.
                The technology implemented in this small prototype project is IR sensor technology for detection of the traffic jam; LED Message Displays Boards are used to show the traffic jam region and traffic diversion path provided by the main Highway Traffic Control System. The 89s52 microcontroller always reads the signal connection between the IR transmitter and receiver and sends it to main Highway Traffic Control System when a long signal break is occurred.
